“No fear can stand up to hunger, no patience can wear it out, disgust simply does not exist where hunger is; and as to superstition, beliefs, and what you may call principles, they are less than a chaff in a breeze. Don’t you know the devilry of lingering starvation, its exasperating torment, its black thoughts, its sombre and brooding ferocity? Well, I do. It takes a man all his inborn strength to fight hunger properly. It’s really easier to face bereavement, dishonour, and the perdition of one’s soul—- than this kind of prolonged hunger. Sad, but true.” — Heart of Darkness (1899) by Joseph Conrad

In 1926, 21 year old Greta Garbo nervously posed with Jackie the Lion (the roaring lion in MGM’s logo).
The bosses at MGM ordered a series of publicity shots for their newly acquired Swedish talent. However she didn’t want to do the pictures at first, so they deducted $25 (equivalent to $325 today) from her salary for her unwillingness. When she became aware of this reduction, she changed her mind and decided to do the photo shoots. This picture was part of the series done in that year.
